#1
Im planning on visiting Scotland after a ten year hiatus this summer. I will be in Aberdeen and huntly area. Are their any visible roman forts in this area? If anyone knows of any, could you post the links on here? Thx

I recommend getting yourself a copy of Lawrence Keppie's The Legacy of Rome: Scotland's Roman Remains. (I was presuming you're in America. Amazon UK link here.)

Basically, if you're not impressed by humps and bumps in the ground, then stay in the pub. ;-)

The only one I have seen that impressed me was Ardoch!
There is possibly one south of Aberdeen, who's bumps and ridges may compare,
But I have not seen it in person!
It you go to Ardoch, avoid rainy days!

Hi Brian,

This is a GREAT site to help you locate Roman fortresses:
http://www.roman-britain.org/military/fo...otland.htm
You can click each name on the left to get a description so you can see in advance if you think a visit is worth your while.

For your conviniance, I have pasted in the Scotland page, but the site is much more extensive, covering all of Britain and all known forts, fortlets and marching camps. Have a great stay!

Only one fortress in Scotland, Brian: Inchtuthil. More humps and bumps, I'm afraid.

Humps and bumps aren't too bad. Half the fun of going to Roman sites is imagining what the landscape around them would have looked like to the Romans, and it's probably easier to do that at Inchtuthil than it is at York or Chester (although you do get the street pattern at the latter!).

There are a few good sites in the East - North of the Antonine wall, the Gask frontier being one of them. Ongoing excavations by Dave Wooliscroft of the university of Liverpool are of interest. This site is probably one of the most important in the development of the Knowledge of Roman Archaeology in Scotland

More humps and bumps, Brian. If you get a hold of Keppie, he'll sort you out.

I picked up a copy of the book Roman Legionary Fortresses and the Ospery Mons Grapious books. They are very interesting reads.I have been to the proposed Mons Grapious battle location near Bennachie but there are supposed to be a few roman marching camps near by. Does anyone know anything about the following camps?

1. roman camp near Dorn
2. Normandykes
3. Raedykes

I would like to visit the locations anyway even though they are lumps and bumps.

Dorn is a new one on me. Where's Dorn?

If you have Mons Graupius, then you have an aerial view of Raedykes on p. 50 and a plan on p. 55. Beccy Jones, author of Roman Camps in Scotland, has posted more information online, as part of her day-job at RCAHMS.

Byron went in search of Normandykes 3 years ago. (Did you ever find it, Byron?!) More information here.

(Is there a character limit on posts, now? I tried to add this to the previous post, but it wouldn't let me. :dizzy: )

Dornock was my best guess.

Nope, none of the locals ever had a clue.....and it is poorly marked on any maps I had at the time....since moved on to more interesting things..like Hadrians Wall and York etc Cool

anyway, the Romans never made it past the wall..... :woot:

No character limit normally Duncan, it's only when my name is flagged that posts get dumped, etc ;-)
