Signum making
#1
Ave,

I am messing around with a signum project, and I wonder what
diameter the Phalarae should be. I'm guessing about 6-7 inches, but
I know some of you have actually made signum and may have a
suggestion. Also, would you suggest a bolt through arrangement, or
rings for the staff to pass through (I guess with a set nail), and
should there be some sort of stand-off to raise the disks away from
the staff. I haven't really got around to planning the hand or
inverted bowl with tassels (real technical name), or COH placard.
Any ideas, suggestions, or closeup photos would be very helpful. e-
mail me directly or post here.
Hey Jared,
I think the disks are more around the 5 inch diameter size. I've been scouring hardware stores for lamp bases that look like these, but have had no luck as of yet. On Matt's site it suggests the bolt through method. Roman Standards
If you make any headway with the disks, I'd appreciate you letting me know!
Magnus/Matt
I have gone over Matts signum page, and everyone else's I can find. Some are clearly ring attachments, some must be bolts. No one really seems to have any detail of their signum posted. I think lamp bases could be a good source, I've also considered looking at small decorative plates, golf cart hubcaps, stove top rings and bases, but I have yet to see the perfect phalarae. I imagine most we see are spun, specially made for the purpose. I'll be investegating that too at some point. It would just be great to be able to examine someone else's closeup.
Well, I'll keep up here with anything I find.
