After action report: Goat skin works!
#1
Coming back tonight from the monthly meeting of Legio XXX, I got caught in a few downpours. Usually this wouldn't be worthy of note, but this time I had my scutum with me and the only way I can transport it in my Porsche Boxster S, is to leave the top down. The rain wasn't an issue for me personally, so long as I was able to maintain a suffient speed on the highway with the windows up, I really didn't get wet. I was worried about my scutum though. As I drove, looking in the rear view mirror I could see water droplets beading on the goat skin cover. After I got home I removed the cover and found that the shield was fine. The oiled goat skin did a fine job of protecting the wooden shield from the rain.
While I'm at it, Matt, did you manage to finish the balista and test fire it?

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

There are a few things that are anachronistic, but we have no intention of telling anyone it's a real roman ballista. I plan on having some pictures and diagrams of real ones in order to set the record straight.
But we can't wait to fire it!
Magnus/Matt
Many thanks, Matt! (where have all the emoticons gone?)
Just one tip. It is not good (either for the arms, or the cord, or the frame) to leave the arms hit against the outer vertical stanchions. The arms' heels (i.e. the bases, the opposite to the points) should have been previously stopped by the inner vertical stanchions. It would suffice to make a new pair of longer arms...
My two cents.
