The question of horseshoes in antiquity is a bedevilled one. I raised it one or two times in the forum too. Because horseshoes are heavier than the average artifact, they sink deeper into the soil, into older strata. Although there is the odd examples where such distortions can be excluded and the excavations were done in textbook fashion (at least according to the standards of the day), there are altogether too few examples to allow us to speak comfortably of a use of horsehoes (as opposed to hipposandals) in any number in antiquity. That is at least what I took from our discussions and what I read myself.
Stefan (Literary references to the discussed topics are always appreciated.)
