2nd Century helms cross bracing for brass legionary helms

Hi Caius here with a question. As a member of an early 2nd century group doing the Dacian war peorid helms of that era would have cross braced helm. We have all seen the Imperial Gallics g, h, with Iron bracesa on the . However if you had a Brass Imperial Gallic I as in my case would the cross braces have been of Iron? The cross braces on the Berzobis helmet look like a field modification. As such they were probably done with the whatever appropriate material was close to hand. To my mind, if iron was what was available then a brass 'I' might well end up with iron reinforcements if modified in the field. If they were a feature of the manufacture however, I would be inclined to think that they would be of brass, in keeping with the rest of the helmet.<br>

Does anyone know what kind of protection would brass give against a downward blow from an iron falx? (I'd feel safer with iron ) <p></p><i></i>

Good question. Brass is a lot more brittle per say than iron...but then, did the romans use bronze more so than brass in their helmets? <p>Magnus/Matt<br>
