Face mask or face guard in late roman period
Yes Jyrki, but it's at home!
Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

Just in case anyone had not seen this later Roman mask?
Not being on FB, I cannot access this. Is there another way that you can get it to us?

Yes, here it is. Not good quality, but I couldn't find it on the web in a search last month.

The mask on the left is from Sotin, the one on the right from an unknown location in former Yugoslavia, now in Ossijek, Muzej Slavonije, inv. 5247. Both were published by Hoffiller in 1911. The publication from which the copy was made is apparently Nalazi rimske vojne opreme u Hrvatskoj = Finds of the Roman military equipment in Croatia, Zagreb, 2010. Neither helmet can be dated by context. They both belong to a group of helmets with two-part masks which was in use during the 2nd/3rd century. I am not aware of any reason to date them later than 3rd century AD.

Thanks Jens!

Somehow these remind me of the much later Kipchak helmet masks...

Thanks Jens, I think thats the very book.
However, why are they in the same pages as the later helmet fragments?

Because authors/scholars/etc can have different opinions, are differently focusses, differently trained (on different levels of research training), etc, etc. Always check things a book (or any other source) will tell you.

I can't recall what the book says Jurjen, I took these photos a year or two back on my iPhone as a favor for Caballo.

The book lists Roman finds by region/museum, not chronologically. The book dates both masks to 2nd/3rd century.

Depending on how late you are lookIngvar in the Byzantine period, there were 7 masks
Recovered from digs in Constantinople!
They are mentioned in one of the Osprey titles on Byzantine
Imperial Guards.
Not sure if I mentioned this already!

We covered those already, they're Turkish and too late for our discussion.
