Introduction - Hello
#1
Hello All,
First of all I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ralph Young, and I live in northern Utah. I belong to a very new Roman Army Living History Society here, so new that we only formed this passed Summer. As of this month we have grown to eight members, with a few others sniffing at the wings. We are the only group of our type here, there are a few Civil War, and more contemporary reenactment groups, and an SRA group. However, no groups with an interest to study and portray to the public what life was like in ancient Rome. We have named our organization " LEGIO XIIII GEMINI MARTIA VICTORIRIX COHOR II LAITORUM Roman Army Living History Society". So far this year we have made a showing at the Utah Renaissance Fair and three elementary school visits. We are learning as we go.
I am a retired Navy veteran with time to pursue my hobbies in ancient military history and maritime history. I am a model shipbuilder and dabble in model railroading. In my pre Navy life I worked on a logging railroad and in a logging camp in southern Oregon. I gained an understanding of trestles and bridging that has carried through to today. During my time in the Navy, I visited Spain, Italy and Sicily where I spent my off time visiting ancient sites mainly Roman. I also have family in Britain and have made trips there, and when I can escape from my wife I visit what sights I can, my favorites being Chester and Hadrian's Wall. Even though my post Navy academic and professional careers led me towards social services, I managed to study history as much as possible. Now that I am retired, I have launched into a journey of research and personal development. Getting involved with living history and this forum are tools that I can use become the type of historian that want to be.
Cheers,

Ralph Young

Thanks Paul. I have prowled both websites. Maybe on one of my visits to your side of the big wet area, I can visit you guys in person. My Wife is from England, although she moved over here back in 79, all of her family is still scattered across northern England and southern Scotland.

Look forward to it- the biggest show next year (I think ) will be the Chester show in June when us Batavians, Legio XIII GMV and many other fine units will be displaying.

Welcome Ralph! Congratulations on your new group. Eight new members is quite an achievement. Do you have any photos from your first outing you would care to show under the "Roman Impression" thread?

I am sure your knowledge of trestles and bridging will come in very handy too Wink !

About what time in June? My wife and I are planning to travel to England in early June once the school year is over (my wife is a teacher). My mother-in-law lives in near St. Helens, and we'll be there for about three or four weeks traveling around and visiting her brothers and sister (on the Isle of Mann). It would be great to work that into the trip.

I'll try to work those dates into the itinerary. Probably won't have any of my kit with me though.

Hi,

Ah, tunic colours.......It really depends which unit you want to brigade with. The RMRS (Legio XIIII GMV) parade in blue. Our unit- Batavian auxillaries- parade in a multitude of greens and various other earthy colours. There will be other units as well.

If you have a look here http://issuu.com/vantilt/docs/romans_preview you'll see Peronis, our centurio in a yellow and black fore and aft crest as an optio and various Batavians with green and yellow shields (though we now use black and yellow, same motif).

You'll also see the RMRS- blue shields- including Len Morgan as Fatalis, the primus pilus, a testudo, and Pacatianus, the optio.

Cheers

Blue is the color that we have chosen. I am a retired sailor, we have two retired Air Force guys and an active duty Navy man as well, so blue kind of was a natural choice. Although the shade of blue is still hotly contested, we have allowed a little variance.
