Montefortino or Coolus C
#1
Montefortino or Coolus C published in FB from Cohors Praetoria
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3...=3&theater
Together with our replica Smile. The peak is connected on the top to look like it is one piece together with the bowl.
Most likely there was a Montefortino helmets with such of rounded cupolas ..but for me this is not a typical classic-shape of Montefortino with so rounded cupolas .
More like( for me) this is the Coolus C helmets..an earlier version from 30 B.C. to 40 A.D. This functional helmet may be used by auxiliaries soldiers to the end of a 1 -st century A.D.

Thanks to the pictures provided by Cohors Praetoria we received a good idea of the shape of this This is our attempt to make replica in our club. This is just a prototype.Material brass. Hammered by hand without mold use . Tinned by hand with real tin (no galvanic plating)
There is much to be improve.
The next will be from copper alloy .
I hope the next one will be much better Smile.

The entire helmet is made here in our club.

I think on the replica the neck gaurd could be made just a little shorter and given maybe a little more downwards slope and some corrections to the cheek plates, the downwards slope of the original does give the idea of a Montefortino along with its greater bowl shape than its rim.

It looks great Rado! But I agree with Brian on this, as you already know! Cool
If you get to doing a montefortino regularly , I would gladly order one! :-)

The helmet carries almost every sign Coolus! Except the frontal guard. I met the book with finds from Ivan Radma-Militaria Sisciensia. Where there are shows several similar Coolus.

Here's how it described like Cat. No. 125 from Ivan Radman!

I am looking at the curvature and taper of the neck guard.
Seems very close to a montefortino, but I guess seeing it is spun, it probably is a coolus...

Byron.

I don't think all Coolus were spun bowls for many may well have been hand beaten this reveals itself when we look at many in the Russell Robinson where they have worn through on the side areas but then I am going a bit off topic here.

Yes, I know Brian. But, how many Montefortinos were spun?

Not all Coolus have front fuse “bow” type ! This is not necessarily mandatory for Coolus helmets. look at the specimens of Zagreb Museum!

It is clear that both options are valid:
It is a revolutionary different helmet model from the familiar and described until now.
In my opinion this is a early Coolus intermediate level between Montefortino and Coolus.
