Damaged Segmentata, simulted combat
#1
Battle Damage To The Lorica Segmentata Of
Gaius Britannicus Graccus of Legio IX Hispana USA
February 14, 2004
SCA?s Estrella War, Phoenix Arizona USA

The damage was caused by a simulated sword made from 1.25? unpadded rattan during an unchoreographed competetive combat scenario. Blows from simulated swords in SCA combat are delivered with significant force. For example: both bones of a combatant?s right arm were broken at this event the day before. Combatants wear forearm armor.

The first photo shows Britannucs in the scenario in which the lorica segmentata he made was damaged. He is the kneeling soldier behind the Auxilia scutum with the red star emblem on a green background.
.
.
The second photo shows the upper back of his segmentata, the dent from the blow, and the lobate hinge that was also damaged by the blow.
.

.
The third photo is a closeup of the damaged lobate hinge.
.

.
Britannicus was wearing a subarmalis of linen padded with layers of wool cloth, about 1/2? thick.

The segmentata plates are 18g cold rolled steel.

The damaged hinge is fully doubled of .20 brass that was not hardened after annealing... it remained somewhat soft and pliant.

The "T" hinge on the right side replaced an earlier lobate hinge that suffered a similar fate at a prior event.

Britannicus skin displayed no apparent bruising from the blow though he was slightly sore for a few days after.
Friend Magnus asked:

In my opinion, yes and no...

Yes, the seg. survived a pretty brutal attack - and kept our miles from a broken shoulder, or worse.

No, because we F***ed up and didn't re-harden the hinges after making them. I think that had the hinges been properly hardened, the barrel and pin wouldn't have torn as badly, throwing the assembly out of alignment and requiring the rebuild of the shoulder assembly
Magnus: Sean, is this to show the lorica's durability to blunt weapons?

Yes, to simulated weapons such as the rudis.

I don't think the steel can't tell the difference betwen ash and rattan...

After we make the repair I'll ask Britanncuus to let me strike him with an ash rudis...

I also want to mount a seg on a shouldered post and strike it with a blade as well. The comparison will be interesting.

The armor is certainly durable though even with an improperly made lobate hinge. Capable of withstanding one of those "..practices like bloody wars" of Vegitius

The problem is that the shouldered pell won't be as resiliant as meat and padding.

Yep, I guess I'm volunteering...
I smack everyone who finishes their segmentata.. with a rudis...

... if they haven't finished their subarmalis I'll lay in a rib shot somewhat lightly so they can become enlightened regarding the need to finish their subarmalis.

... if they are wearing their subarmalis then I'll hit them with force so that they know that their seg is functional and protective...

.. if the seg dents then they get a lesson in pounding out a dent...
umm... we play a little rough...

'Course, Brittanicus is one of our active duty Marines, so getting hit with a rudis is really the least abuse he has to put up with...
