Help to preserve Roman Ratiaria !
#1
[Image: Ratiaria.jpg]

Ratiariais the one of the main cities in the Northeastern part of Moesia Superior and since 125 AD the town is known as “Colonia Ulpia Traiana”. After 272 AD it became the capital of the late antique province Dacia Ripensis. Twenty years after the archaeological excavation were stopped, no scientific information concerning Ratiaria and its area is available. This part of the modern North-Western Bulgaria remains "undiscovered" and "unexplored" for the archaeological science.

Since 2008, the Bulgarian Archaeological Association have set themselves the goal to reopen the excavation in Ratiaria and to rescue the precious scientific information concerning this part of the Roman Empire. For three years we have discovered 14 new Latin inscription, over 700 artifacts, more then 15 new monumental buildings, and over 20 new legionary stamps. In 2010 was uncovered the well preserved decumanus maximus of the city. All these data show that Ratiaria is not irretrievably lost for the Roman archeology.

Over the past 20 years the ancient capital of Dacia Ripensis was brutally stolen from researchers and transmitted to criminals in order to sell its wealth in private collections and Acktion. We still continue to insist that Ratiaria and all its region (modern Vidin District) must be returned to the scientists. Corruption at the highest level continues to impede the reopening of the archaeological researches there.
