Gallic I Mainz Eyebrows
#1
I have another question for anyone of such learned authority on Gallic I Mainz helmets.

Dan Peterson said in another thread that the Gallic I Mainz helms were roughtly imitations of the Gallic H, except for the fact that they were bronze instead of iron. I tend to believe that.

Obviously there are differences which give it more an Italic nature than Gallic. It either had a low twist crest mount or a top similar to its Aquincum sibling, instead of the usual Gallic slide mount. Also, the panneling on the cheek guards of both I models suggest Italic origin.

But what about the eyebrows? Deepeekas I Mainz has the same ones as the H. In Dan's book, they are close to the Gallic G, except there is a groove that perfectly separate them into two halves, upper and lower.

If you look in Michael Simkins Osprey series, he has both a drawing of the original find, and his reproduction. The only problem with that is if you look closely at the picture of his reproduction, the eyebrows are just like the Gallic H.

His drawing, however, shows the eyebrows similar to what is found in Dan's book. I'm confused! Which type do the real thing show?
The Imp. Gallic I from Mainz is similar to the Imp. Gallic H from Augsburg, but differs in that it is slightly taller in the crown, allowing for fairly vertical sides which would allow its side plumes or feathers to stand upright rather than leaning inwards, it has a larger neck guard, and it has feather tubes. If I remember Robinson correctly the eyebrows are fairly similar to those of the H. Be carefull of trying to read too much into the eyebrows. Although Robinson concentrated heavily on eyebrows as a typological feature, Connolly has made a convincing case for saying that little information can be drawn from the shape of the eyebrow apart perhaps from the helmet's place of manufacture. Eyebrows can no longer be seen as an absolutely secure way of dating a helmet and it is quite possible for two very similar helmets to have slightly different eyebrows.
If anyone can tell me how to get digital images onto a post, I have one of the front of the Guttman Gallic 'I' clearly showing the eyebrows.
