The fact that 'we' could not crap with the benefit of indoor plumbing had nothing to do with a lost civilization (it was all preserved just a short distance away, in the East), but with an economic crisis that laid us so low that there was not enough economic power left to put rooftiles on our houses again for a thousand years. Let alone plumbing.
