A new style of Paludamentum
#1
Hi All,

I had this as a commission from the Gemina Project to construct a new parade Paludamentum for an Optio. I was looking at a style which could be draped in a fashion that both pom poms and knotted fringing could be seen from various angles.

This is a hand woven item in a 2/1 diamond twill which I think is a good shape to achieve a draping pattern which means all decoration can be seen. This was the basis of this particular brief. It is laid out to give an idea of the shape and construction.

As you can see, the shape is based upon a squared off version of a semi circular cloak. It is thought the pal. might have been this shape, although there is much debate about it as the majority of references have been taken from known sculptural examples.

The folding should really be pleating and fastening on one shoulder.
