I don't play many video games. I have O AD. I don't have RTW and don't even know if it runs on Linux. So while I'd be interested in helping, I'm not sure whether I can.

If you're doing a strategic game, I'd suggest focusing on scenario differentiation, logistics, and victory conditions.

If you're doing a battle game, I'd suggest reading Sabin's book, deciding on no more than six to eight main unit types [Pike Infantry, Other Close-Order Infantry, Light Infantry, Cataphracted Cavalry, Other Close-Combat Cavalry, Light Cavalry, Elephants, Chariots, etc. are what I think of] and then defining some variations [superior experience, superior archery, superior armor, etc.] for each. Also figure out some way to get pauses in the combat.
