Oldest Roman Camp In Germany found
#16
I was struggling to see the 4 studs in a cross arrangement...i thought it meant one nail, with 4 studs for fastening to the leather...
This is great news Simplex, and thanks for the English version Moi.

@Alexandr K
.... as far as I've understood the various ( and vague) informations given in the press-releases
they're talking about s.th. like "umbrella-shape" here. They seem to have comparative samples
from contemporary camps and other finding spots (Alesia ?) for dating, After all the secure dating
came from the (stratified ?) pottery at Hermeskeil. And we are down to "I've still to read that
essay in the recent Archeologisches Korrespondenzblatt to get more down to facts" again, here. --- :errr: and I'm down to limited time on my side, again.

Hello all,

Thank you very much for the replies.

Strange, I have read all the linked reports, but this seems to have slipped my attention. Next time I have to be more careful. Anyway, the fullest report in the Archeologisches Korrespondenzblatt is currently probably the best bet for getting the most accurate information. I must check if I can get my hands on this one (within some reasonable effort).

Greetings,
Alexandr

Does anyone, by any chance, have a photo or two of these hobnails or ones like them? As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words...

There's one (of sorts) in the report I posted on the first page - it's within the report.

"Open Day" at the excavation
The "Trierer Volksfreund" informs us that there will be an "Open Day" on Sept. 21st 2013 , from 15:00 CET.
On Occasion of the end of this years campaign, both Dr. Sabine Hornung and Arno Braun will be present to answer questions about
old and new finds and findings.
If there will be enough requests there will also be guided tours.
The visitors are requested to leave their cars in the nearby parts of Hermeskeil and go there by foot as not to harm the agricultural installations thereabouts.

The Trierer Volksfreund is errant about the fact that this is (still) the oldest roman camp found in Germany,
after last years publications about Limburg it can only rank as secoond oldest.

I have another question. What are the differences between late republican and imperial (or perhaps middle republican) hobnails? I mean I didn't know that there is such diversity and there are various distinct types of hobnails, so that we can use them for dating of finds...

Greetings,
Alexandr

The link to the Past Horizons report has this (not a lot of information, but some):

"... iron shoe nails once protected the soles of Roman soldiers’ sandals. The pattern of a cross with four studs that can be seen on the underside is largely typical for the time of the late Republic. Their size, with a diameter of up to 2.6 cm, is also characteristic for this period"

I dont know if theres still any interest but you can see a photo of the nails from Hedemünden here...

http://www.grote-archaeologie.de/roemer.html

Seems to me the obvious one in the foreground has five studs not four!... anyway I was wondering about these larger nails and would like to read what it says in the book... I'm not really prepared to pay out €75 for the privilege though which seems a somewhat excessive price... I guess its time to visit the library...
