Campovalano Xiphos
#1
Greetings,

I am looking for information on the Xiphos with scabbard found at Campovalano (Italy).

You can see a picture here:

It is the one at the left in this picture:

Does someone have better (and detail) pictures of this find?

The description of the scabbard I have read speaks of an iron scabbard with bone inlay at the scabbard mouth and chape.

Was the scabbard completely made of iron? Or did it have an leather covered iron core? How were the scabbard throat and mouth constructed?

Thank you very much in advance!

Best regards,
Jef

Let me see if I can find any info. Thus far, all I have is the same information you posted.

Are you entering the Greek reenactment scene with this weapon?

I'm really interested in this too. Buy from a Republican Roman point of view. The type of sword used before gladius hispaniensis?

Thanks Doc I'm very curious to learn what you find out.

Very strange that the construction of this sword is unknow to most people. It is one that is reconstructed by Manning Imperial for example, but the reconstruction does not really resemble the original artifact, nor the description in the few sources I have been able to find.

I am interested in alle cultures and all time periods. I'm (very) slowly collecting pieces of equipment for several different impressions. Very early Roman and greek are amongst those. Smile
