Do you mean the paper or the board? The boards seem not to be the same as their paper equivalents within one branch, which makes it more complicate to find the best ground for one's work. here is a review by Paul Jackson of the Montval and Arches boards compared to the papers.

I think oils are a perfect medium to paint with - even for beginners - because you have time to paint around until the result suits you, if not you can brush away the colour easily and start again. Watercolours are more difficult because you always have to know exactly what you're doing and corrections are nearly impossible. That's why I have the greatest respect of artists using them.
Great drawing. But as I've argued in the discussion, this man looks like a common late Roman federate soldier and not like a late Roman tribune. While under some very exceptional circumsatnces a tribune might do away with all his armour or other badges of honour that would make him recognisable as an officer, the common late Roman tribune would not look like this.

Very nice but PLEASE tell me what are these "whiskers" on the front of the helmet bowl? Is there any evidence on these? I have seen them on several illustrations and I am beginning to have problems with sleep because of them :x ...
