I came across this in the Fishbourne Palace Museum.
The usual spur iron horse shoe,

plus this intrigueing one,

Made of lead.

Any ideas?

I would say the lead version is the same as the others but just not lasted quite as well. Lead is very soft and the piece which lies across the sole of the shoe probably correspondes to the upright metal bit on the other shoes.

But as its lead I am not sure if that second photo actually is a horse shoe. It would be bloomin' heavy and the point of a hippo sandal is to make the going easier for the horse.

Yeah it's strange. Yet it is exactly like the iron ones, apart from the deformation...
Perhaps a fitness aid for a horse?
Or, a model for the smiths?
Or a prototype, shoe for silent running....
or....

I suppose if they didn't have any iron avaialble lead is the only other thing they could use. but chances are it would change shape on the horse's foot.

Training aid? Erm...you don't get horses fit by tying leg weights to their feet...unless you're training Tennessee Walking Horses that is :???: Sad

Well, you will notice I threw in a couple of other suggestions too Wink

Soooo, I guess I'll need to cancel the membership for Buccephalus down at Gold's Gym then? Sad

I think the model for the smiths might be a good option...the person who made it perhaps was not a smith, but was skilled enough to create a model in lead to pass on a requirement to local smiths who might not have seen them before?

Or, possibly the lead was usued to get the right fit on a horse, then the iron ones made...
