Roman Army under Agricola
#1
Hello

I'm trying to find information about Agricola's campaign into Wales & Scotland between AD77-84, but i can only seem to find information about the island of Mona and the battle of Mons Graupius.
Also trying to find information about the 2ND Adiutrix Legion, 2ND Augusta Legion and 9TH Hispana Legion.

Is their any books or websites that anyone can recommend to me, please.

Thank you

Not new but I think these are good:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Agricola-Conques...26&sr=1-12

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Agricolas-Campai...907&sr=1-1

The 10 Caerleon lectures in one volume:

And this is coming soon which may have something of interest:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Roman-L...009&sr=1-1

On Wales, specifically the Silures, this might interest you (focus of the content was more military than the title appears):

The best recent book on Agricola's campaigns is Duncan's Osprey one (mentioned above) - short but clear and concise. Maxwell's 'A Battle Lost: Romans and Caledonians at Mons Graupius' is also good, if you can find a copy.

A decent place to start, though, would be the original account by Tacitus, which tells us most of what we know about Agricola himself and the campaigns he led:

Tacitus - Agricola

For an on-line survey, this site has some useful background material (better in the detail than the overview, actually):

Roman Military Campaigns - Agricola

As for legion histories, the ones by Ritterling once available on RomanArmy.com are currently out of action, it seems... But Livius offers some detailed summaries here:

Livius - Roman Legions

Hmm, and a blurb from Keppie, in fact - which suggests quality. It seems to be intended as a companion to Goldsworthy's 'Complete Roman Army' - and what appears to be a quite pointed rebuff to another recent publication on the same subject!

Minor health warning: Church & Brodribb (whose 1869 translation this is) wrote before the "definitive" manuscript of the Agricola came to light. Much safer to use Tony Birley's excellent Oxford World's Classics version: http://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Ag...Hol96ER4cC.
