"One thing i have noticed are the large number of rams head handles found and dated on military sites occupied by Legio II ie Hod Hill and Exeter from the first cent. Was this design prevelent in the legions or did different legions go for different styles?"
If they are commonly found on sites associated with Leg II Augusta, I wonder if the rams' heads might actually be intended to be capricorn heads, that being a totem animal of that legion.

I think most re-enactors probably simply think 'patera' rather than 'first/second/third century etc. patera'. It may be one area we need to take more care over.
