As well as the spear and the sword, did hoplites carry daggers? If so, what did they look like?<br>

Not as far as I know. The sword pretty much WAS the sidearm, and after that short Spartan thingy got popular, it wasn't much more than a dagger anyway.<br>

The classic hoplite sword seems to have had a blade about 2 feet long, more or less. There's an example from Italy with a 27-inch blade, though I wouldn't be surprised to see them as short as 20 inches or so. Not a lot of solid information out there...<br>

The blade of the Spartan short sword seems to have been in the 12 to 14-inch range, maybe a little more. Up-close and personal, as it were!<br>
