Who Killed Alexander the Great?
#1
After our recent article in Ancient Warfare magazine, Vol. V, No. 5 (October, 2011), I see that History Today magazine (April, 2012) have jumped on the band-wagon. Nice to see that Ancient Warfare magazine is ahead of the curve!

I always believed Robin Lane Fox assassinated Alexander. At least, he managed to kill a good story.

Haha that's awesome. You know I've never been bothered by the man, until he wrote that silly book on Greek myth, though I know most Alexander historians tend to react negatively. He seems an affable chap often to be seen in the library here and the people I know whom he have tutored all speak highly of him, which is something in itself.

P.S whilst we're on Alexander the Great what do you think of Hammond? I liked his stuff on military side of things though I find the way he and Hatzopoulos infer massive amounts of Macedonian state machinery from later Roman authors absolutely terrifying.

Also, how about a new tactic? Alexander the Great never died, instead he became immortal and sits in a nuclear bunker somewhere deep in the Gedrosian dessert controlling us all like puppets.

Can't be. Lucian of Samosata witnessed Alexander's case against Hannibal precedence. And it is clearly stated that this happened in Radamanthes' court room on the Isle of the Blessed. So there, a perfectly believable lie by respected author! (Lucian, Vera Historia). Dozens of deified emperors will be able to confirm it! Tongue

Wherever he is I hope he's careful with that wine and has not learned of stronger stuff! Remember Cleitus... Wink

As far as who killed him, will be ever know? Poison is a cry raised far too often in antiquity. Naturally, some general or other may have helped matters before things got out of control and their King tried to turn on Carthage. Walking through Gedrosia was bad enough, if Carthage was suggested, that would have meant walking along the Sirte! But goodness know what else Alexander suffered from between unhealthy climates, binge drinking, war wounds, and stress: a combination of these can easily be fatal.

That's as good as I've read for some time. Couldn't agree more.

Well there are lots of conspiracy theories but I like the one that he went for a boat ride in the sewage of Babylon - ie downriver from the city and probably caught something like malaria, which he was unable to resist due to his massive war wounds (he even survived a catapault bolt through the lung), stress, and binge drinking
