Heh, I think the Brits and the French have ..er..um..."acquired" more treasures from antiquity than the Vatican in the last 200 years. Ask the Greeks

Anyway, the point is well taken and it's always mystified me why Augustus (the dummy who broke off Alexander's nose) never took the tomb back to Rome. Instead he uprooted some obelisks and shipped them back- how lame is that ?
Maybe he didn't want to offend the Alexandrians

Acquired, yes. Many traders with many rich customers.
I bet the vatican has sold or melted down most of their 'vast number of treasures'...

Also, the quality and style of the gravegoods was questionable. The gold is too thin for a royal tomb, and the style is wrong.

I can't verify any of this independently however, not being an expert on any of those issues.

I have seen it few times while it was in Thessaloniki museum, and finally 4 years ago in Vergina. I really don't know which work should be better than that one from royal tombs in Vergina. Wreaths are thin because they represent leaves. Silver and bronze vessels are created in the best manner of ancient Greek craftsmanship. And the cuirass, all I can say I was stunned. By the way presentation of Vergina is one of the best I have seen.

I wouldn't be surprised to find Alexander anywhere you would not expect to find him...he had a habit of doing that...lol

I am pretty sure this is it being worn by somebody who stole it...Caligula  (compare with this
Alex)

I was just reading the articles at the link Giannis gave.....and am wondering about the skull reconstruction....and another one eyed Macedonian general whose descendants ruled Macedonia...although I think his suspected tomb was found at Pella?

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon
