DEVA 2012
#91
I've split off most of the trousers stuff, so back to Deva 2012.

I think events like this, or Marle, Nijmegen and others, are what re-enactment needs!

I agree! I look enviously at these big events!
Was there a yob rebellion surpressed?
I thought it was pretty good overall, apart from some girl whorepeatedly yelled'boring' during the parade.....the time she spent she obviously found it interestign enough
to watch the entire parade! LOL

On an aside note, as me and another legionary marched in step across the suspension bridge, we were able to induce quite an occilation....imagine what effect the whole troop of us might have had...reminded me of the Milvian Bridge...

Gary,

I prepared a few blackboards for information purposes, but the rain made them useless!!

Byron,

If you ever go to Chelsea Bridge in London, there is (or used to be) a sign telling troops to break step for just this reason.

Cool! I recall a story from the US CW relating to troops marching across a bridge. read it years ago so the details are foggy!

Awesome pictures. I do notice that the UK-made seggies fit WAAAAAY better than ours in my group. I'll have to chalk that up to my shit-skills lol.

Graham, I really enjoyed your pictures. I also liked the one of the officers in the tent. It helps me with my own centurion impression. I need to re-do my pteryges I think. Maybe add some more layers and increase the circumference...and maybe adjust my phalerae harness (you guys will recognize who made them). Do you think it is sitting too low?

Sorry to see this thread sullied by one person's garbage attitude. Everyone here likely knows my perspective on stitch you-know-whats and I have zero tolerance for them. In the 11 years doing Roman, I have noticed that there will always be anachronisms with people's kit. But as one of the Brits posted, it's the overall impression and spectacle that the public are showing up to see, not the minute details. They don't care. But for some odd reason, some reenactors take it to the extreme for no good reason.

And while it is important to be as authentic as possible, I would rather see 50% more people show up in 50% less authentic kit, than have 5 guys standing around pretending to be actual Romans in what they consider 100% authentic gear (which they are usually just as wrong about anyway).

Oh, and a slightly OT point...but we had an event at the Royal Ontario Museum this week-end (hence the mosaic I am standing in front of), and it was a very surreal experience having my Roman kit on, amongst so many Roman artifacts. I can't imagine what it is like to be at an actual site in gear.

Great job everyone at Deva, looks like it was a good event.

Looks pretty good to me Magnus!
You should make the trip over here some time!
I know it's not an easy thing these days, but worth the experience!

didn't hear the person saying boring during the parade, someone asked who the late roman's were and the their friend said oh they are round heads which afterwards was funny.

but the best reaction had to be during the emperors speach at the town hall after the british commander yelled god save the queen and the reply came back from the troops the earlier romans from my standing point did nothing staying in character superb disipline the person yelling about the republic, cause the later roman unit to all turn as one it couldn't have more impressive if it have been prearranged. i think the brits were just as outraged but the noise of hobnails on stone and tight fitting helm made it hard for me to hear or see their reaction. yet still my favorate part of the march.

Magnus,

I'm 5'8". At ten and a half stone I'm a little thinner than you but you would be welcome to try my Len Morgan seg if you wanted. You might have to bring your own belt with you though - mine would never fit! I would look forward to sharing a pint or two with you afterwards as well, so hurry up and book those tickets.

Me as well! I'm sure I could get a balteus, tunica and probably caligae through customs no problems.

If I can ever get my old house sold (carrying two mortgages right now isn't fun) then those tickets will be a bit closer to being real.

This was an interesting thread. Wish we could get that many reenactors in one place. Might have something at the Boy's Latin School in Baltimore... working on it. Still, seeing this stuff makes me wish we could somehow get a plane for all of us over here to go over.
