Observation re masks on Phrygian helms

I have recently downoaded all the images I could google for the Phrygian Helmet with the embossed cheek pieces/ face mask. I had not particularly noticed previously that they kinked forward/ outward. I mused with my friend that this would make an excellent throat protection against incoming missiles. He agreed and then countered that it was more likely to allow space for seriously thick Greek beards.
valid point i thought.
