Meet the Romans, by Mary Beard on BBC April 17

Quote:Yes agree with all the other comments but would add the caveat that Divine Women has Bettany Hughes presenting it which is definately more pleasing on the eye in my humble opinion

Blagh, on the eye yes, but oh she doesn't half love herself. See her in Helen of Troy?? Get over yourself.

How unnecessary!

I have just watched the third and final part (bother) and was just thinking that for anyone interested in aspects of Roman furniture there were some incredibly beutiful pieces shown which otherwise lurk in the vaults of Rome's museums.

A very interesting and all too short series on many levels and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What a stupid and arrogant article from Ms Brick. Give me intelligence and knowledge over looks any time. With all due respect to Mary, it's not as if I'm in line to date her!

Had to record the third episode, but I look forward to having a moment to watch it.

You'd think this woman would have had enough of shooting herself in the foot by now - she must enjoy it...

However, even some sensible people find Mary Beard less than praiseworthy, as in this article - http://www.illuminationsmedia.co.uk/blog...ews_id=924 - from a couple of years ago by Alex Butterworth... "Revisionism is the addiction of the lazier brand of television history, and Mary Beard’s gleeful contrarian shtick makes her a natural choice to deliver it, with some naughty nursery language to wash down the unoriginality of the debunking..." I'd rather Mary Beard spends her time doing research than undergoing a nose job, as suggested by the article.

Not only will Mary Beard's research will be useful for much longer than Ms. Brick's looks, it will also be healthy to have a program where the effort is put into substance and content rather than special effects. I'd rather watch a well thought out documentary (however revisionist) than one badly scripted and historically flawed but presented by Miss World. It's a bit like "Troy": Hey, we've rewritten the Iliad so much it's mostly unrecognizable, but we've got Brad Pitt in it!!!

Although, this seems to be Ms. Brick jumping on the bandwagon. The original comment seems to come from Mr. A.A. Gill, with Ms. Brick exploiting this for the Mail.

Hi all
With reference to my post i hope no one thinks i was being in anyway derogative to Mary Beard. The ref to Bettany Hughes was only for "eye candy" and meant to be fun as all of us blokes like to "oggle". I'm sorry if seemed as if i dissaproved of Mary doing the program. We have a young member in our group that has had her as a tutor at Uni....Dr Beard he still calls her, so i only have total respect for the lady.
The third was better than the second that was better than the first, the BBC edits the program not the presenter.
As for the other woman Samantha Brick that loves herself....i think thats it.....she loves herself.
Once again sorry if my post was interpreted bad. It was never meant to.
