Squamata lacing
#1
I'm renovating an old squamata and have tried using the leather thonging method as per the newstead scale find. What a relevation not only is it a fast way of attaching the scales it is also fast to repair, what system do others use.

What did you use before?
My cuir boille scale was originally sewn to each other and then the backing with linnen threas= epic regular repairs post combat.
I am currently reworking it but will confess to using shoe laces for the sewing.
My favourite bit of Tacitus is his observation that the barbarians stil used leather thonging while civilized Romans used woven lacing (probably an inaccurate recall- but the gist is there).
That said i have just completed my steel and brass lammelar with mostly leather thonging (like leather boot laces) and the odd row of cheap Chinese football laces and the leather is far superior.

I initially used waxed linen thread and as you say, epic repairs. The double leather thong works really well.
