Byzantine Empire: Greek Romans or Roman Greeks?

I read the posting of Chariovalda and I see that if we stick to ancient part then we cannot examine Byzantium properly.
Personally, I find it difficult to limit myself to "early" period and exclude the rest.
I seems that I must look for Byzantine forums that they do not restrict the timeline.
