New single piece Paenula reconstruction
#1
Hi guys,

Here is a latest paenula cloak I was commissioned to make for a member of the Deva Victrix, it is a pattern with the two different types of fasteners which are made from hand knotted square cord. The toggles are hand polished cow horn

This is a 100% wool 2/1 basket woven melton. Hand stitched and from a single piece of fabric... no joins!

This is the Lahun pattern cloak 1st-3rd century, Egypt, Petrie collection.

I don't have a pattern, I just make them from looking at the originals. If you look it up, you will be able to find details in the Textiles Archaeology Newsletter

Is there a particular weave on this cloak that is not obvious from the photo?

PM sent.

Very nice work - again!

Is this item the Lahun cloak made by one piece of fabric? I read some years ago somewhere, that the paenula was made by one piece of fabric (means: not separate piece for the hooded part), but i don't remember, what and where was the orig. from.

Yes, it's made from a single piece, the original is also a single piece woven to shape. You can see a picture of the original in the Textiles Archaeology Newsletter. I think if you contact the publishers, they might have a copy of it. My copy is in a print out and I don't have a scanner at the moment
