AMPHICTYONIA, archaic and classical reenactment
#1
The reenactment event of Marathon 2011 has already been known to most of you as the biggest gathering of Greek re-enactors to date, but it has also marked the beginning of a very important (almost historical) cooperation between all the groups that were present in the comemoration of the battle, with the common goal to develop classical reenactment, support high accuracy standards and create bigger and better events.

In one word, Marathon 2011 has marked the founding of "Amphictyonia, the League of archaic and classical reenactors"

http://www.amphictyonia.org/

After the first phase of the founding of the League by the groups that attended Marathon 2011, Amphictyonia is now ready to accept new members, and create the global community that we all envision.

It should be noted here that only groups can become members of Amphictyonia, not individuals, and everyone who wants to participate to an event organized by the League should belong to a member group.

Whilst we strive for healthy and crouded events with the inclusion of as many groups as possible, according to the theme of each event, vital for the Amphictyonia is the high accuracy standards of all the participants. Thus, among the rules of membership there are those concerning the dedication to the historical representation of the past.

Naturally, the first concern of the newly found League is the organization of the next Marathon event in 2014 and the process has already started so that everything will be ready for a great gathering of reenactors and public this time.

However, Amphictyonia is not a "Greek" organisation, as the name states, it welcomes the participation of all groups around the world that recreate the archaic or classical world, be it Persian, Skythian, Etruscan, Egyptian, or even Indian or Chinese. We seek to bring the recreated world of the time back together, for the good of knowlege, education, comunication, fun and progress!

So, please visit the new website (still in progress), read the constitution and membership sections, and admire the photos of the first gathering of Amphictyonia in Marathon 2011, imaginning what the next event will look like in 2014!
We welcome all new groups that fulfil the requirements, to grow as a comunity and bring owr common passion forward!

An exciting initiative and I wish you and your fellow organisers success in your endeavour.

“ἀνδρῶν γὰρ ἐπιφανῶν πᾶσα γῆ τάφος, καὶ οὐ στηλῶν μόνον ἐν τῇ οἰκείᾳ σημαίνει ἐπιγραφή, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν τῇ μὴ προσηκούσῃ ἄγραφος μνήμη παρ᾽ ἑκάστῳ τῆς γνώμης μᾶλλον ἢ τοῦ ἔργου ἐνδιαιτᾶται”

Thucydides, The Peloponnesian War, book II, chapter 43, section 3

Loose translation:

"What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others"

(more literal(ish!) “The sepulchre of famous men is the whole earth, not only the epigraph engraved on the columns in their own country, since also in foreign lands there dwells the unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts and minds of men.”

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Merlot in one hand, Cigar in the other; body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride!
