Roman After School Program
#1
Hi,
My name is Marcus Norwood and I am a technology applications teacher in Pasadena ISD in Pasadena Texas. Five years ago I was able to get Diamond Billiards and other members of the billiards industry to donate equipment to the after school program at my campus for a billiards class. Through the years my program has benefited from donations of instructional materials and guest speakers.

Recently I put on a 2 week Roman summer camp that received great reviews from the kids. At one time or another every kid in the group said it was their favorite class. On our last day we had a parent expo. One parent came up and gave me a gift card, thanked me and said all her son had been talking about for 2 weeks was the Roman class. She told me that she didn't have to fight him to get out of bed to come in, which she was grateful for.

Based on this response I have decided to create a Roman class for our after school program. Generally I see three sets of 12 kids per day. Usually I only work the program two days a week.

I am posting this thread seeking donations for my class. Any donation of materials to make kits would be nice. Depending on what I can generate we may have to make cardboard kits. I would also accept materials to make other items. Books and any other item pertaining to Rome would also be desirable.

If anyone can help please message me.

Thanks,
Marcus Norwood

What exactly happens in this camp? Elaborate, if you may!

THere are several units in Texas that may be able to offer some form of assistance; See a lsit here: http://www.ludusmilitis.org/index.php?page=18

What type of materials do you need? Stuff to build kid size equipment? Small tunics?

For the camp I discussed my 1st century kit among other items I have built or purchased. The kids made a kit out of cardboard and duct tape. After that was completed we did drills out of the Ludus Militas Tactica. We also did slinging, archery and javelin throwing. On the last day we cooked roman bread.

For this after school program I want the kids to create their own kit and do marching drills. I would also like the kids to do some leather working, model building and possibly create a scaled down ballista that we will shoot foam shafts from. I am also going to get them in to mosaics and maybe how to use a groma.

As for donations of material I was thinking in terms of leather for armor projects and shoes.
