You might be missing the point, actually.

I assume the author you're referring to is Christop Luxenberg of the Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Qur'an. His claim wasn't that "foederati" was derived from Byzantine Greek, but that it was derived from the Syriac for "gathering" (qrishe). The point would be that "Quraysh" refers to the Arab foederati rather than a specific tribe. Not entirely implausible.

Anybody else have something that might be relevant to this?
