What time period?
#1
I been scrolling through the internet and visiting a few sites and i think i'm a little confused. It was so much easier to reenact the civil war because there was only 4 years of war but doing roman there is many years and it get confusing. I'm working on a impression and i need to know exactly what period my equipment was in use so i can better study that time period. Here is a photos can anyone tell me the dates they used this gear? Thank you for all your help.

***NOTE. The canteen i am wearing has a strap that i made out of leather. The rules this year with ALL reenactments every soldier MUST have a canteen on them. I chose to use this one and made a all leather sling with brass "S" hooks and attached it to the canteen. I don't know if it is period but with the chance of not being able to hit the field i rather be safe than sorry.

Thank you very much! Ok thats narrowing it down. Who was the emperors and what other equipment did they use? Helmets would be a great start.

More specifically I believe the Gallic H roughly dates back circa AD 60-120, the Corbridge A segmentata dates roughly AD 40 through at least AD 120 (if I recall correctly the Newstead type became more popular afterwards). What sword do you have? With the kit right now you could realistically stretch it to an early Second Century legionary.

Also, Roman legionaries wore their gladii on their right side so it did not interfere with them drawing their sword into their scutum

Check it now...and just remember, it's very difficult to specify dates for kit unless found within a very specific context. If you are shooting for mid-first century, you're good to go. It can be stretched forward or back, as required by your group. Only the stitch counters are going to give you an issue about 5-10 years difference in equipment.

Claudius through Trajan, do you mean more equipment in general because that could be a really long list lol

As Magus says, the combination of Imperial Gallic type 'G' helmet and Corbridge type lorica sementata puts you fairly securely in the second to third quarter of the first century AD. As far as I know, your canteen is of a type which has yet to be found in pre-third century AD contexts and there have been suggestions that they may be oil flasks rather than water canteens but they do seem to be very common amongst re-enactors. My own is a pottery one.

It looks to me as if your tunic is rather narrow. A realistic tunic should be as wide as the distance from mid-forearm to mid forearm when standing in a cruciform stance and should hang at least to mid calf when unbelted. It should be square or a wide rectangular shape like a pillowcase. There should be no need for sleeves as the shoulders of the tunic will naturally fall over your upper arms to create sleeves.

I notice that your armour is an Indian produced one as well. The hinges on the shoulder guards feature upstanding modern style hinge tubes rather than the flatter Roman style tubes. At some stage you would probably need to replace these therefore, if you are wishing to have an accurate portrayal.

I hope this helps a little.

So are you aiming for a specific time period if you are in a group doing an event?

Our legion does alot of different periods but the period i'm aiming for is the most common one and the most done in our legion.

That's mid-first...so you'll be good to go, once Rusty hooks you up. Plus all the stuff you have now is loaner gear...so now you can grab one of your ACW buddies and tell him he has no excuse not to come and do Roman lol.

Imperium does a reasonably good job of giving approximate dates for these helmets, although they have far from all the applicable helmets: http://www.imperiumancientarmory.com/Helmets.htm

Also be sure to check out the Romanarmy.com's database, it has most of the helmets we know of pictured along with some info about them, usually where they were found and in what context they could be dated: http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/index.php
