I'm interested in this time period in Roman history. What are some good books available, besides books by the ancient authors, that I can read (which aren't just summaries)?

Scipio Aemilianus
Cato the Censor
The Gracchi brothers
Paullus

Books on these guys? Is Austin's book on Scipio Aemilianus any good?

Well there is Greece and Rome at War by Peter Connolly. It has nice long section on the early Republican period, especially the Second Punic War, although there is some good info on Macedonian wars as well. A bit too general perhaps, but it should help somewhat

I would strongly recommend the two books by H.H. Scullard:

A History Of The Roman World From 753 to 146 B.C.

From The Gracchi To Nero: A History Of Rome From 133 B.C. To A.D. 68

They are still the standard if you are serious about history, but, they are not picture books.

Good Luck
D. L. Stockton "Gracchi"
Its a little over focused, covers just the Gracchi and misses out on the greater inter-family interaction, but gives information about the entire family and their times.

Astin's book 'Scipio Aemilianus' is quite good for this period. Another one to look at is Brunt's 'Italian Manpower 225 BC - AD 14' which is slightly dated now but covers a lot of the big issues in the army during this period. As someone noted above Scullard is also really good on this period and his 'Roman Politics: 220-150 BC' is another one to have a look at.

For complete listings of all of the known magistrates (quaestors, aediles, praetors and consuls) recorded as having held office during the Republican period look at 'Magistrates of the Roman Republic', by Broughton (sorry, I can't remember his first name - I went through university referring to it as 'Broughton's MRR').
Who was that historian that went along with Scipio (the son) to siege Numantia around 150 BC? He made a decent account of that time, which falls to your needs, right?

You're thinking of Polybius, I believe.
Greets
