Cavalry Training Weekend 24th and 25th March
#16
It was certainly a great and amazing weekend. I am currently going through over 800 photos and I am sure some will go up on the Comitatus website in due course. The late Roman, Greek and Hellenistic kit spread over the campsite gave the weekend a unique feel. We went through all the elements of the Roman, Greek and gladiator displays, and learnt from the experience. We used more horses than I can remember, generally running two sessions at once in different parts of the farm to give everybody a chance at re-enactment riding. The weather was splendid with misty mornings and sunny days. The weekend allowed us to do things we normally just do not get the chance to do, for example putting out eight riders at a time in authentic saddles to do the displays. And the evenings were epic.

I'll second all of that. My first weekend of reenactment could not have been more fun or more friendly. Particular highlights included throwing axes (definitely getting one of them), British Bulldog with shield walls (not strictly reenactment but a good game to play afterwards) and horseback archery with real live targets (shieldwall: the legionaries had been warned to keep their feet in, so I feel no guilt at all about a blunt shot into a protruding foot...).

And, as John said, the evenings were pretty epic. My wife expected me to come home aching (and was she right!) but I think the soot took her by surprise!

Many thanks to all. I'll be back...

Cheers Dan.

I was very interested in your style of horse archery. You speed shooting is far faster than I ever hope to achieve. We are sorting out a uniform for you and look forward to seeing you again. And you really do need to get an axe. Your weight of throw and accuracy was scary.

Thanks John, let me know where you got the axe heads and I'll have one in short order. Love the photos and look forward to seeing you all again. Annoyingly, your foray to Staines is the weekend I fly to Jordan, so I can't even take advantage of the nearby show!

What a shame! Oh well, there will still be plenty of other opportunities!

There are now a couple of photos from the training weekend here:

Myself and and others are now onto a mass tunic sewing session with lots of new sets of clavii to sew before...May! Somehow we will manage it, but time is short before the summer! Confusedhock:
