The Aquincum Organ (need help real quick)
#1
I am currently in Budapest, trying to chase down the world-famous Aquincum organ, the best preserved ancient organ. But I cannot find the original Roman pieces. The Aquincum museum has both reconstructions of the individual pieces and full-fledged models, but they say the Budapest City Museum has the original find. So I went there, but they in turn said the Aquincum museum holds the original parts too. Which they do not because I checked every item there. The Hungarian National Museum does not have the original Roman pieces either, so where is the original Roman Aquincum organ?

I would appreciate a real quick answer because I will only stay one more night here. Thanks in advance
Stefan (Literary references to the discussed topics are always appreciated.)

I have never heard of this find before, but do you have or can you get the catalogue or accession numbers? That should make tracking what happened to the originals easier. A few minutes' search through databases doesn't turn up any accession numbers, and I am too busy to look up the different archaeological publications.

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.

The Aquincum Museum claims they hold it (http://www.aquincum.hu/programok/aktualisangol.htm), although that link dates back to three years ago. If you did not find it there, maybe the pieces have been put in storage, gone to restoration (although they seem to have been there fairly recently) or gone somewhere else on a loan?

On this page (unfortunately in German only) you can find a summary of the organ finds and also if you browse that website see how a hydraulis was reconstructed by Justus Willberg (former member of Musica Romana):
