Paphos Siege Mould
#1
On Cyprus, in Paphos, the siege mould has been found that the Persians erected when they attacked the city. There is a photo of this mould in one of the supplementary volumes of the Cambridge Ancient History. Is there still something to be seen today?

(I am asking because I'm planning a holiday.)

I have never visited it, so hopefully a more reliable informant will come forward, Jona! However, when I was writing Besieged: Siege warfare in the ancient world, Franz-Georg Maier (the most recent excavator) led me to believe that it could still be seen. He sent me this photo, showing how the siege mound was "landscaped" into the later fortifications:

Thanks Duncan. Have you any idea where the photo above may have been taken? Can you indicate it on Google Earth?

If it's still visible, that would be quite sensational, and a strong argument to fly to Cyprus. Otherwise, my holiday will probably be in Beirut or Riyad...

I also found this map. (I've arrowed excavation area KA, which was the area of the north-east gate attacked by the Persians.)

I'm in a rush, so no time to correlate it to Google Maps. If you manage to, please let us know! Confusedmile:
