The Recruitment and Equipping of Phalangites?
#1
Aside from the long pikes and other equipment changes, was there any significant difference between the classic hoplites and the Macedonian style phalangites?

Specifically I'm interested in whether they still purchased their own equipment and whether they were still primarily drawn from the middle to upper classes.

Ave,

I gather you're refering to the Greek city-states and not the rural kingdom of Macedonia.

In the Hellenistic period I keep reading that the Greek city-states kept relying more on mercenaries which were supplemented by native troops which may or may not have been phalangites. It sounds like they adopted the Carthaginian model for raising armies on an ad hoc basis.
