Segmentata - Dating from Spanish find results
#1
My search skills failed to find anything on this, but there must be a thread!

I'm intrigued by this PDF summary of the Spanish segmentata finds, that pushes the dates much further back. What is the academic view of this new dating? Particularly as the author in his timeline (see end of PDF) pushes the Corbridge into the 3rd century, and the Newstead out into the mid-4th century.

Based on the long use periods of other equipment I suspect that longer periods of concurrent use of different types of Segmentata are correct. Also does anyone have any evidence of Segmentata being converted or rebuilt as newer types? It seems logical that Segmentatia plates would be reused when possible.

This has come up quite a few times in the last five or six years. Unfortunately there's not much to go on beyond the paper you already have, so it's hard to generate much discussion!

Here are a couple of old threads concerning the Spanish finds:

Iberian segmentata finds and dates

Late Roman segmentata?!?!

plus the end of this one, which I'm guessing you've already seen, Paul!

Thank you Nathan, very useful and interesting! I knew I'd read a thread that mentioned these finds.
