Ancient tactics recreated: Difficulties & Successes

The most popular tactics to try recreate are probably Greek and Roman since there is likely more written material available. Other ancient writings like the Bible do contain clues about tactics of other ancient cultures.

Some reasons for trying to recreate ancient tactics include but are not limited to:

Movies (Spartacus being one of the better attempts)
Documentary Films and TV programs (The History Channel often failing miserably)
Video Games
Drill Demonstrations at Public Reenactment events
Simulated Combat events (like LAFE and SCA cringe )

Some of the Difficulties in recreating Ancient tactics include:

The fragmentary nature of the the written and visual records
Quality and accuracy of and our understanding of ancient weapons and armor
Scale (not enough personnel to test tactics)
Training and fitness of the personnel
Inability to test under actual combat conditions
Safety considerations for simulated combat
Tactics changed over time

Unlike the movie Spartacus it is unlikely to be able to get a good part of the Spanish
Army to test out tactical theories!

One of the recent successes in recreating ancient tactics (even though incomplete and at the Century level so far) is the TACTICA http://www.ludusmilitis.org/articles/LM_...y_2010.pdf

Please post comments and links to additional resources esp on other cultures!
