I'm considering making one of these for camp kitchen use...to conceal a scroll of paper towels, which seem very useful to me, and would make my wife very happy if a)we had the roll available for quick cleanups, and b)it didn't look phoney.

Should I take a circle of light wood and fit it into the bottom/top to help keep the roundness, or might the leather alone be sufficient to do that? I'm guessing that the disc of leather at the bottom/top is bent over to make the seam, sort of like an oatmeal box. Am I thinking rightly for a change?

I have some 3oz veg tanned cowhide, which looks like just the thing. Anybody know how the seam is made? Flat overlap or what? Is there any reinforcement at the top of the cylinder?

Should be a fun project, once some specifics are settled.

I like the way that the strap travels beneath the tube, reducing the stress on the attachment points!

Hey Dave, I recently made a quiver (sort of scythian style) but it's similar to the design of yours. I used thicker, maybe 5-7 oz leather, which helps maintain it's shape naturally. I am thinking once your leather is oiled, that yes, you will need some kind of insert in the bottom to keep it stiff.

Worse comes to worse you try it without first, and then see if you need one.

And I didn't overlap any of the leather on the bottom...I just cut the circle of leather to the same diameter as the tube, then sewed it.

I used as an inlay a cardboard pipe which is used to roll paper for large printers.

Good suggestions. I've about decided that the seam in the tube pretty much has to be a flat, simple, overlapping seam. Am I right there?

I have thought about making one of these as well. I never could find any information on its construction. The biggest thing that I don't understand is how the bottom of the caspsa is joined to the tube?

Demetrius, what site of Matt Amt's are you refering to? I can't find it anywhere. Do you have more detailed pictures of the capsa?

Magnus, I like the quiver and how the use of color! The leather you used, is the piece at the bottom of the "tube" the same thickness as the tube?

It seems to me that the back seam must be flat, or the whole thing would be crazy hard to do. I'm guessing that the bottom would be just like the top. I'll probably cut a circle of wood that fits as closely as I can make it in the bottom, to help support whatever is in there.

Let's compare notes as we go along. I hope to start construction next week, after this weekend's school presentation.

For help on how the bottom is attached to the cilinder; just look at any bino-case. Quite a bit of stitching but well worth the effort mile:

Demetrius you could do it this way with a side opening might be better if you have paper towels as you can snap pieces off without pulling it out of a tube
