Yes actually the use of the Caligae as a standart military shoes starts during the second century BC, before that period all evidences shows little boots. Just look at sculptures and see when the first caligae appears on soldiers foots. I am preparing something on the first caligae, but evidences are so scarse. Fortunatelly, comparing late hellenistic sandals, etruscan ones and the earliest caligae known there is enough evidence for an educated guess tentative reconstruction. We are still working on it but I shoul be ready by next year I hope.
