recreated in colour!

I finally decided to buy
THE ROMAN LEGIONS
Recreated in COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHS
by Daniel Perterson, The Crowood Press, 1992 (1998 Reprint).

I bought it in Rome last night and I really enjoyed looking through it during a nice super in Campo dei Fiori. Most photos are very good. I especially liked the very last photo which shows a group of 6 cavalry troops riding down a sandy beach. The effect is very exotic and beautiful. I hope it was intended as a hint of an upcoming book on cavalry, only marginally touched in this volume. Its too bad there is a sudden jump between the end the 2 centrury and the 4th armour. I hope more re-enacting groups try to fill this gap.
Salve,

In Eckardt, K., Am Limes. Römische Experimentalgruppen in Europa (Benningen 1996), a couple of German reenactment groups are listed that have equipment for this period. In England there is Quinta ( Cohors V Gallorum) that has third century equipment. Some pictures of their equipment can be found in Sumner, G., Roman army. Wars of the empire (London 1997). The website of Quinta disappeared some time ago and I haven't found any new one yet. For more photo's of reconstructed Roman cavalrymen you could get Junkelmann0s Reiter wie statuen aus Erz and Die Reiter Roms, especially volumes 2 and 3.
Addendum:

The reenactment society Historische Roemergruppe Pedites singulares from Augsburg has the years 170 to 260 CE as their main period, though they do other periods as well and also double as Alamannic reenactors.

Edited by: Sander van Dorst at: 6/13/01 8:33:27 pm

I just recently got a copy of this too. I like it, I like it a lot! My favourite piccy is the reconstruction of Marcus Facilis on page 40, both because Facilis's stone is also featured in the Barry Cunliffe "Roman Britain" book I won as a little girl and which first got me going with all things Romanorum (mentioned in an earlier post), and because I think the reenactor looks a dish! (grin)
2020! yeah!
OK, too far ahead, it was 2002 of course.

So that's Dan in Late Roman all-Deepeeka gear?
Except for the dished shields of course, deepeeka does not make them, although he never shared with us where he did get them from (no matter, we have our own source for these nowadays )

No member of the Populares Vindelicenses then!
Thanks for the info guys.
Yes, he did. He got at least some dished shields from Holger Ratsdorf, when he was cheaper...
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.
