So I saw an image on page 35 of 'The complete Roman Army', an illustration of a corvus boarding, The centurion on the far right caught my eye. I love the combination of hamata/squamata, but I have never seen a belt/apron like this, could any of you guys let me know what this is and if this was only in use during the roman republic?

The illustration is Peter Connolly's.
In his book, Greece and Rome at War, he shows part of an Etruscan urn with a warrior wearing this scaled 'apron' (pg.81). So, I'm not sure if it would have been worn by Republican legionaries. Connolly's illustrations are sometimes speculative (which I applaud, btw). He also has a Macedonian phalangite wearing this apron on page 78.
Maybe the apron is shown in a Roman historical context on some other depiction that I'm not aware of.
