Modifying a Helmet
#16
I've never had any smithing experience with cast steel/iron. Can it be heated and annealed, then worked? Or just worked hot like other steel?

When the one on my Gallic F snapped, I had a friend who was able to weld it...but I dont' know about working it like you mention Dave.

I have to share this, since it worked really well. I got the smallest bottle jack at the home improvement store, set it in the helmet with the base against the back and the top against the front. A few gentle workings of the handle and the jack was slowly stretching the helmet. I would leave the jack in for a while, remove it, try on the helmet, then jack it some more. It is now in a shape where I can wear it comfortably.
