Hey wow, an e-book, pdf format.

Of course I was first surprised that Mike knew about novels but then was then relieved to see that it was a book from Pineapple Pubs.. the Pubs part explaining (at least to my mind) how he might have learned about a non-scholarly non-scientific written work.. but then I found out that "Pubs" was short for publications.. well, now I'm befuddled.
Of course I was first surprised that Mike knew about novels

Does this mean all my efforts to push good historical novels are falling on stoney ground? Eheu!
The only pubs I go in are ones that serve scrumpy from the wood (there is a very nice one at the end of Lendel Bridge in York, which (it has been suggested) partly explains why my RB trips visit there;-).

As for novels, I learnt far more about the Julio-Claudians in my formative years by reading I Claudius than I ever did from Scullard, Garzetti, or any of that ilk.
Aaaagh! I think I've burnt out my optic nerve! What were they on when they designed that? Red diesel, rather than cider, methinks. For the curious, here's a real cider lover's page (especially for those of us who make the stuff):
Getting back to the topic, it turns out that our author was involved with setting up amazon's cd/dvd operation in the UK... and so is indirectly responsible for my acquiring I Claudius on DVD... spooky...

For those who cannot handle digibooks (can anyone?), there will be a paperback in May and I have pointed him at Oxbow... so those of you on the other side of the pond may get to see it by 2005 ;-)
