Excellent point Jurjen, if you are going to sink $600-700 in a sword, it would be a good idea to have one commissioned

Both are available in the US and Europe
Deepeeka makes a steel Gallic A and DSC a tinned bronzed one
Deepeeka makes a brass Coolus C and DSC has brass and bronze and tinned bronze
DSC often provides linings Deepeeka probably not.
Or if you have the cash a custom commission from one the RAT vendors will get you an exact fit with the specific features you desire.

Is DSC, Deepeeka?

Can you recommend a RAT vendor for commissions?

The Erik Konig's helmets are incredible to say the least. I'm not familiar with Matt Lukes work.

Gallic A is a real possibility. Are Coolus type helmets considered auxiliary or heavy infantry?

Many thanks for your input.

Hello!
Please what means "RAT vendor fro commissions"?

I start new text: well the celtic items here on the website are not well done:
http://legvi.tripod.com/armamentarium/id289.html

But i have a question about the roman helmets, too:
I would like to make a full reconstruction of the solder's equipment in time ab. 20 BC. He was a celtic cheef in a roman army. He didn't had a helmet - because there is not a helmet item in his grave. It is very late Lt III (Lt D2) grave.

I think the correct helm coud be a Imperial Gallic A Helmet.

But we don't have this helemt items in this area, where the grave commes from. We have many other roman's items but not a helmet of the time ar. 20 BC.

We have younger helmet items, Gallic C, G etc .... they are evidented in Kroatia, too.

Well i have the same question as the man above who was started this topic.

I order my items allways by individuall way - i don't get them via mass-online shops ala Deepeka etc ....
Question:
Where get the RAT members good Imperial Gallic A helmets? What means the zitat in my tet above?

Where can i get good individuall ordered Imperial Gallic A helmet and how much does it cost (euro)? Do that handworkers for helmets have any homepages, too ?

Hope somebody will helping me with advice..... *)

Thank you!

Joze

Edit: i found the earliest Weisenau helmet here on the HP - but it is not of the time ab. 20 BC:
http://www.replik-online.de/de/index2.html

why the price is ab. 10 x higher as by the Deepeka or some others handworkers - is the replik-online helmet really much more better and more authentical, too?

Well, i found the evidence about helmet of the time Lt III - Mokronog IIIb on p. 199/200, link: http://av.zrc-sazu.si/pdf/50/AV_50_Bozic.pdf grave 1 and 41, p. 200 (text on the left, above). My grave is the nr. 37 the same cemetery, but ab. 5 years older ab. 20-15 BC.
But in that grave wasn't be a gladius - it was celtic late Lt sword with other roman itmes and no helmet. I want to have a helmet, too.
We know helmet of that time ab. 20BC - but not on the same cemetery; in the other one of Strmec near Bela cerkev, ab. 20 km far from that in Verdun. It goes not. I preffer ab. 5 years younger Weisenau helmet of the same cemetery Verdun, because i think they had the same cultural tradition.

and now about the helmet quality, where to order the helmet.....

I'm still waiting for the Tinned Gallic helmet from Rusty. I've talked to Matt, about getting either a Hagenau or possibly a later model.
I'm eager to see the SOTW helm.

Here is a helmet timeline that might help you in chosing the right helmet for the time period you want to portray;

Of course always ask here for the latest information before making a purchase!

Are the Buch helmets strictly cavalry? I was hoping infantry wore them as well as I rather like the overall design and appearance.

Thank you - so i think i am correct with Weisenau A helmet in time ab. 20 BC; some speaks that my grave is in the time ab. 15 - 0. It is not classical Lt D2 time - time ab. Gallic wars (in that time coud be ok the helmet Port, Niddau - but it is to early!). Here from Slovenia we know another helmet type Novo mesto - from Strmec near Bela cerkev: it is next form of the celtic helmet wich was of iron but the new form is made of bronze.
Here the link to the pdf text, see the text on the right side above on p. 199 (grave on the winegarden of the Joze Kolsak; publiched as the Grave I Kolsak B):
http://av.zrc-sazu.si/En/50/Bozic50.html

The grave had the same sword the "noric sword" as the sword in my grave Verdun nr. 37 is, but it is not the came cemetery i posted above. I have this second variante, too.
The bronze helmet of Bela cerkev (usually called the Helmet from Smarjeta, typus Novo mesto):

Roman helmets are usually listed by estmated first use dates but will have been used for
a long period afterwards. Perhaps first used by the Legions then passed down to the auxillia then even given to friends and allies. Many different helmets (some new some old) may have been in use at the same time even within the same unit or geographic area.
A newly raised unit may have all the same helmet at first but losses transfers resupply
would change that within a few years or perhaps a few weeks in wartime.

The idea that 3rd-century helmets with 'closed' ears were strictly cavalry has been pretty much discarded now I believe.

Buch itself was probably an infantry fort. The helmet was in an unfinished state, so would presumably have been intended for one of the garrison.

Got the DSC Tinned Bronze Gallic in today. Very nice, heavy and quite a lot different than any helmet I've ever handled before as I collect 20th century helms for the most part. This one is a real hoot.
