Sadly no one at the camp was able to defend themselves as it is illegal in Norway to carry a weapon or even keep one where it is readily accessible. (Self defense is not a lawful reason to have weapons in Norway) Also although the criminal who did this
was legally allowed to have weapons for allowed sporting purposes he violated the law by
carrying and using them for this other purpose. The death toll is over 85 (mostly children) Capital punishment was banned in Norway. I can't imagine a case that justifies it more.

None of these points seems to play a role in the discussion in Norway, though. It is extremely weird to suggest that a camp of 250 or so teenagers between 14 and 17 should have carried guns to defend themselves while on a holiday camp, to say the least. In general I find it very arrogant, strange and cynical to imply in the current situation that the Norwegians are stupid or culturally and socially erring because they have different laws than you do.

Also the gun violence rate in the US, where you do have capital punishment and are allowed to carry weapons for self defence is much higher.
Data from 2005:
In the US it is at 8.55 whereas in Spain ( ban) 1.5, Denmark (ban) 1.09 per 100.000 population. The ratio of homicides commited with guns for the countries above is: US 2.95, Norway 5 overall homicides with guns in the whole country, Spain 0.35, and Denmark 0.36. That means that in the US there were in 2005 more than 12.000 homicides with guns. In comparison to that the 90ish in Norway killed by a christian fundamentalist are not filling the gap.

Read a well researched article about this subject.

So I´d say your arguments are a non sequitur.

I cannot reply without by necessity violating the boards rule on modern political comments.
(which in retrospect I see my original post was bound to elicit)
I would be happy to PM anyone who want to see what I would have posted if it were allowed.

I can say that it is very sad this happened regardless of laws, fault, policies or politics.

He's a RW extremist nutjob terrorist who was having dialogues with English and European anti-Islam extremists (they've uncharacteristically clammed up all of a sudden), and had set up a farming business which meant that he had access to tons of fertiliser. He perpetrated the biggest atrocity in Norway since World War Two, and, after bombing the government quarter in Oslo, shot dead 85 schoolchildren and young adults up to the age of 25 who were in the Labour party youth wing, disguised as a police officer, calmly wandering around a small cutoff island for two hours executing kids. The only reason he stopped was because he ran out of ammo. Local residents went out to the island to try and rescue the kids.

And no, Norway is not in the EU.

Guys
Thanks for your restraint - suggest any further comment is carried on by PM or on Facebook. The news websites also have full info on a very sad event.I'm impressed by the Norwegian attitude and response.
