Events that allow women portraying soldiers?
#76
Yeah, but my pleas usually fall on deaf ears!

Quote:I guess most of us have read a lot of opinions regarding women portraying soldiers. And I know that that debate is not going to end anytime soon. So I'd like to ask for it to not continue in this topic.

But the fact is, we do have women in our group, and some of them prefer impressions of the military kind. So I would like to ask about people's experience with this topic, and because we're a European group, I would most appreciate information about events in Europe.

I do know some events that allow this, and I know many don't. The trouble is, many people have strong views on this topic, to the point of giving those with opposing views decidedly unflattering labels. And no matter how bitter a pill the following is, one doesn't wish to hurt the whole group by being seen as pushing some ideology too hard.

So if you could point me in the direction of events that do allow women in "male" impressions, or at least share your experiences regarding this matter, I'd be most grateful.

I'm female, and at the moment, I am currently portraying a soldier or close to one -- tunica, sandals, belt and I'm normally wearing a focle, gladius and pugio then a cloak depending on the weather. This is only planned to be temporary however, as I'm working on getting together the right gear to do a gladiatrix impression. The group I'm with does not permit women in men's roles, but as I wanted to learn how to fight regardless, that was the next best thing -- I'm learning both Celtic and Roman methods of fighting as well as hopefully drill come Spring, so s'all good.

I, sadly, can't point you to any events but that is some experience on the subject from my point of view Smile

"...I'm still waiting for the wind to get up a bit more on your avatar to find out what's underneath the tunic... "

Ahah! Well I normally wear mine much shorter than our good friend Magivs, but notice how clever I am by standing behind him in his avatar so you can only see my head.

Yeah, because allowing girls to play with toy swords gives us cooties.

I am not certain but Legio VI and their partners Legio IX out in the Capistrano area might be cool with it. I believe they do a 2nd Century AD impression and would most likely welcome the 'captate' of young tiros mixing with veterans! They recently had a headcount problem for an event and attended not as soldiers but refugee women and children. They need bodies!

I think the roman cavalery would extinct if there women did not portray soldiers, thanks Amy and al those other girls ( and men)who do the cavalery impression. Most of them do a wonderfull job on horseback and look very good as roman soldiers. so why shouldn't we allow them to do roman soldiers.

This thread is a bit wierd, as no one can actually point out who does not allow woman to protray soldiers!

is it just an ego boost for people?

Hi GUYS!

I make armor because I love the history and the craft. I try it on for fun, but I look terrible. So, I hire hunky male models for the photos. I wouldn't even make a good Amazon!

I have seen a few men that look terrible in armor, too. They are too fat, too old or too scrawny. The whole thing for me is the fantasy; who looks good and who really doesn't. If a woman can look great and can carry off the warrior look, YAY!

Women have been hiding in the ranks since the dawn of time. Why not now? :-D

I think it's perfectly acceptable for women to hide in the ranks! :-P

Yes, I did. Smile I formed the armor in steel, then I sculpted the appliques directly on it with an epoxy clay. After that cured, I textured it and used colored polishes to ge the bronze patina. This armor was for the American Assoc. of Museums show. I wouldn't be good for battles, but it is good looking for parades.
