Thanks so much! Does the greater size of the marching camp vs. a permanent camp simply have to do with the numbers of men involved? Are there examples of single cohort marching camps?

Let me turn your question around -- are there examples of single cohorts moving around? And under what circumstances might they be moving around? During a conquest phase, when we might assume the countryside to be fairly lawless? (Answer: probably not. Confusedhock: ) Or during a later phase, when the major routes have been pinned down with forts and fortlets?

In which case, your cohort on the march might be looking for accommodation more like this:

Note that Lenoir throws forts in amongst his camps (his Ardoch, Cadder, Cawthorn B, Newstead II, and -- probably -- Chew Green IV are all forts), and his list of camps can now be substantially extended (not surprisingly, as his article is 34 years old).
